At this specialist unit you will be seen by Dr. Hashir Aazh PhD who has a great deal of experience in helping patients with the most severe tinnitus and hyperacusis. He is an international expert who leads specialist training on tinnitus and hyperacusis rehabilitation for hearing-healthcare professionals and leads clinical research on tinnitus and hyperacucis rehabilitation in children and adults.
Given the expertise of the principal therapist the treatment is efficient and user-friendly. Undergoing such treatment in most NHS trusts is not possible and in the very few that might offer these the process may take years.

What treatment is available?
There is no proven “cure” for tinnitus and hyperacusis. However, people often benefit from the therapy and cope well with their symptoms. A recent study conducted in NHS in collaboration with scientists in the University of Surrey and University of Cambridge suggests that from the patients’ perspectives, a therapy programme based on the principles of counselling and cognitive therapy focused on tinnitus and hyperacusis rehabilitation was the most effective treatment in helping them to manage their tinnitus and hyperacusis. Tinnitus
“My tinnitus was very loud and it used to affect on my concentration, hearing and sleep. After the therapy, although I still hear it but it doesn’t bother me anymore and has no effect on my concentration, hearing or sleep. I feel that I cope very well with my tinnitus and do not notice it most of the time. Tinnitus was ruining my life but now I feel healthy and have a very good quality of life. ”
“I would sum up my experience of attending the clinic as 100% positive.”
Hyperacusis
“I was not able to go out without using my ear protection. Even a simple journey to my local Tesco was a torture as the loud noises were penetrating into my skull! Noises of tires of my car on the road surface were unbearable and made me feel dizzy. After the therapy, I no longer have an adverse reaction to noise. I no longer use my earplugs. I feel much happier and more confident in my daily activities.”
Hearing loss combined with hyperacusis
“I didn’t understand how I could have hearing loss but not like loud noises! My poor husband didn’t know whether to shout, whisper or just settle for hand signals. I felt quite sad! After treatment of my hyperacusis, I can now use my hearing aids effectively. I no longer feel isolated from my friends and family when we all get together. I feel so much happier.”
